Why Your Laptop Got Slow — and Which Fix Is Worth Paying For

Five real causes of a slow laptop, ranked by how often we actually find them, and what each one costs to put right.

A slow laptop is the single most common complaint we attend. It is also the one where people most often spend money on the wrong thing — usually a new laptop, when a ₹6,000 upgrade would have bought three more good years.

Over the last twelve months, here is what we actually found, in order of frequency.

1. It is still running a mechanical hard drive

This is roughly half of all cases. A spinning hard disk reads at perhaps 100 MB/s on a good day; an NVMe SSD reads at 3,000 MB/s or more. Windows 11 in particular assumes an SSD and behaves badly without one.

The fix is an SSD upgrade with the existing installation cloned across — no reinstalling, nothing lost. Typical cost is ₹6,000 to ₹8,000 including a 1TB drive and fitting. Boot times generally drop from two or three minutes to under twenty seconds. Nothing else you can spend money on comes close to this.

2. It is thermally throttling

If your laptop is fast for ten minutes and then crawls, and the fan is loud, it is protecting itself from heat. Dust in the heatsink and dried-out thermal paste are the cause, and both are cumulative — this is why the problem creeps up over two or three years rather than appearing suddenly.

A full thermal service costs ₹899 to ₹1,799 and typically drops sustained temperatures by 15 to 25 degrees. On a throttling machine the performance difference is dramatic and immediate.

3. Not enough memory

Eight gigabytes was comfortable five years ago. Today, a browser with fifteen tabs, a video call and an office suite will exceed it, and Windows starts swapping to disk — which is slow even on an SSD.

Check Task Manager while working normally. If memory sits above 80 percent, adding RAM is worth it. A 16GB module costs around ₹3,300 and takes twenty minutes to fit.

4. Startup clutter and background software

Updaters, cloud sync agents, three different PDF readers and two antivirus programs fighting each other. This one costs nothing to fix and we will often do it as part of another visit.

The honest caveat: cleaning startup items helps boot time and responsiveness, but it will not rescue a machine that is genuinely short of hardware. Anyone promising a dramatic speed-up from "optimisation" software alone is selling you something.

5. A failing drive or failing battery

Less common, but worth ruling out. A drive with reallocated sectors slows to a crawl as it retries reads, and some laptops throttle the processor hard when the battery is degraded and the adapter cannot supply peak demand. Both show up in a five-minute diagnostic.

When replacing genuinely is the right call

If the machine is more than seven years old, if the motherboard has a fault, or if the repair estimate exceeds roughly 40 percent of a comparable new laptop, replacing is usually the better decision. Our technicians will tell you that during the diagnosis rather than after taking payment for a repair — we would rather sell you the right thing once than the wrong thing twice.
